Drinks Bought In - New Regulation
3/9/2016 4:58:46 PM
The practice of buying drinks for consumption later has been accepted practice in the Club for some time. Unfortunately when drinks are bought but not consumed on the date of purchase this introduces a financial risk to the Members, or the Club and a reputation risk the staff serving at the time. Members may over pay or the Club may not receive full payment if drinks are served without payment by mistake. This risk is much greater if drinks are bought in for different opening sessions possibly with different serving staff. The Committee have therefore decided to ask Members to only buy drinks for consumption on the day of purchase and not ask the bar staff to "Put one in" for another day. A new regulation comes into immediate effect that credit for drinks that are "bought in" will not be carried forward after the Club closes on the day of purchase. Purchases not consumed on the day (session) of pur-chase shall be forfeit. If you have any query in respect to this new Club regulation please con-tact Chairman Paul Evans Tel. 07766 363040 Or Secretary Chris Nottingham

The Village Club,

at the heart of the community

A Busy Weekend

The 14th and 15th November were two busy evenings for The Village Club.  Firstly, on the 14th, in Armistice Week of the one hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War, the club played host to a musical event, From Music Hall to Mons, a musical entertainment event comprising of WW1 period songs and sketches typical of Music Hall.  Over eighty guests, many in fancy dress were in the audience enjoying the entertainment  provided by several local thespians and joining in renditions of Keep the Home Fires Burning and other favourites from one hundred years ago.  The entertainment received rave reviews from all,but the best reviews were for the generously proportioned meat and potato pie and pea supper prepared by a handful of local Masterchefs. The evening was a great success in raising money for two local churches.

Photos by Steve Ross of the evening can be found by follwoing this Link -

The 15th saw a charity event organised by Club Chairman Paul Evans in aid of The Yorkshire Air Ambulance.  The event started at noon with a jumble sale which ran to 5pm eventually raising over £130. The club ran a barbecue throughout the day and into the evening.  Thanks to Dougie Mack, Chris Nottingham and Phil Jackson for their equipment and efforts in respect to the barbecue which earned £130.50 towards the fundraising effort.  The raffle earned more than £300 and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance pop up store earned more than £200.   In the evening local band Citizen Smith played a concert to a very good audience during which a “nearest Pound to the bottle”, in this case a bottle of top quality champagne donated by Bookers Wholesalers was run.   At time of writing the total raised from this is unknown to the author but all I can say is there was a long queue of people willing to shove a Pound or more for the whole time the competition ran so I imagine another significant amount was raised through this simple but effect manner.   Additionally, collection boxes were available throughout the club for the whole day.  Again at time of writing the amount raised through the collection boxes is unknown to the author.  This community has some very generous people.  Thank you to everyone who contributed to a very successful day.

As Paul Evans works for Barclay’s Bank, who have a charity match funding scheme for charity effort by their employees, every pound raised will be doubled up by Barclays making the whole effort even more worthwhile.

So having said what’s happened at the club, what’s coming up? Clearly, Christmas and New Year are drawing inexorably closer day by day.  Club opening hours over the holiday period, particularly for New Years’ Eve will be published on the Club web site shortly.

The Village Club,

at the heart of the community

Progress continues at The Village Club as we move into Spring.  Band events continued with Sugartown holding a gig for Valentine’s Day in February and a very successful St Patrick’s Day event featuring The Raisers playing an excellent mix of folk music and this year there was genuine draught Guinness to complement the Irish feel for the evening.

Thanks from the Committee go to Dougie Mack,  Simon Mack, Mark Wilson and Martin Helliwell who renovated a portion of the wooden fencing at the rear of the club during March.

Thanks too go to Les Weatherill who organised the club’s new signage recently.

At the end of January The Village Club held its AGM. The meeting received the resignation of Paul Hill from the Committee who, after many years Paul decided to take a break from Committee membership.  The Committee wishes to thank Paul for his efforts over the years. Ian Ellston and Joanne Nottingham were elected onto the Committee during the meeting. The meeting also ratified an increase in membership subscriptions for the year 2014.  Subscriptions are now £15 per year, excellent value at less than 5p per day.

Preparations for Le Grande Depart, Le Tour de France are advancing and The Village Club’s Chairman, Paul Evans and Stewardess, Mandy Helliwell were interviewed on Stray FM discussing the history of The Village Club, how it was associated with cycling at the start of the 20th Century, being called The Cycle Hotel at that time and events The Village Club aims to run over Le Tour weekend of 4th, 5th and 6th July. A podcast of Paul and Mandy's interview with StrayFM can be found on the web here . Their interview starts 13 minutes into the podcast.

It is also hoped to hold charity fundraising activities over the weekend too. On the subject of fundraising, in three separate fund raising events held during January The Village Club is very pleased to have raised a total of £242.60 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Additionally, money was raised on quiz nights which has funded the purchase of two radio microphones to help with presenting the quiz and is well on the way to paying for a baby changing facility; no, not a baby exchange facility no matter how much you may wish that sometimes, but a wall mounted unit to provide a clean and convenient place to change a baby’s nappy!

Coming up at The Village Club is Band, Red on Blonde, 8pm 5th April, 2014, back by popular demand to play their mix of covers, rock and pop.
So if you want to join The Village Club and benefit from the facilities it offers, simply call in and see Mandy or Martin.

The Village Club,

at the heart of the community

A happy New Year from The Village Club, Green Hammerton.

The Club had a very busy festive period with members and  guests of all ages enjoying a series of events.

First amongst these was the Children's Christmas Party and Club Christmas Draw with the party drawing the attendance of a very special guest.  Despite the heavy workload inevitable just before  Christmas, Santa took time off from his  labours to help distribute Christmas presents to the Children attending the party.  This was  followed the same evening by the Members' Christmas Draw.  This year £800 worth of prizes were distributed to the numerous lucky winners and a very merry evening was had by all.

The Village Club New Year's Eve party with local group The Guvnors was extremely successful with many a member feeling slightly worse for wear on New Year's Day.

On the sporting front The Village Club Pool B Team finished first in Boroughbridge District Winter League 2 gaining promotion, whilst the A Team finished third in the same league, a creditable performance all round.

Congratulations to both Steve Ross and Eric Corser for respectively winning the Jimmy Jenks Memorial Pool and Dominoes Competitions.

The 11th of January saw Mandy and Martin Helliwell celebrating one year of Stewardship at the club with another party featuring Elite Entertainment a duo from Knottingley offering a mix of songs, music quizzes and karaoke, including some very dubious appearances from Freddie Mercury, Madonna, George Michael and Cher tribute acts.

The Club recently extended the selection of Real Cask Ales with the installation of a third hand pull pump.  Now the Club's John Smith's Cask pump is complimented by beers selected from local brewery Rudgate on one pump and a variety of guest cask ales from around the country on the third pump. Furthermore, draught Guinness has been reinstated rounding off a great choice of beers, stout, lager  and ciders, all at reasonable prices.

Coming up is The Village Club Annual General Meeting which commences at 6.30pm on 31 January in the Club Function Room.  A wee Burns Supper Snack and dram for attendees.

Finally, The Village Club has launched its own new website.

So if you want to find out about upcoming events and other club information check it out on this site.
